When we hear about bad things happening, especially when many lose their lives at the hands of a few, we need to remind ourselves that people can be good.
“We all have an innate capacity for goodness—and this is the hope for the human race as well as the hope for each individual person in the journey of life,” clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst Jennifer Kunst, Ph.D.,writes.
Turns out, these are the words this jogger screamed at her would-be sexual assaulter in a public restroom, and the squiggly lines are the GPS trail of her evading, and beating up her attacker. Respect
According to Kunst, the way to make the most of your life is to harness this orientation toward goodness so that it has more and more influence over your personality.“In the context of psychotherapy, we might even say that it is the aim of the psychoanalysis to strengthen each patient’s good, constructive capacities so that they can be used productively to manage the destructive elements.“However, Kunst believes that at the same time, it is essential to acknowledge and own the destructive capacities because “it is only when there is a bridge between love and hate that humility, authentic guilt, and forgiveness can make way for healing and restoration.”

A few years ago, contact lens company 1-800-Contacts got curious about how we see each other, and sent asurveyto more than 1,000 Americans for insights into the classic questions, such as ‘Do you think people are inherently good? and ‘Are we rotten?’ and the results suggest that we might be alright after all.
Despite the turmoil around us, 83 percent of the respondents think that people are fundamentally good.
This might tie to life experience, which can reassure you that people can unify and overcome.
Of those surveyed, 80 percent feel that people have a responsibility to help others with time and effort, while 72 believe that people should help financially. The same generational disparity seen for the fundamental belief in human goodness shows up here too, as 94 percent of Boomers say they’ve given to a charity, for example, while just 69 percent of Generation Z claim they have.

And it turns out that we can see past each other’s political beliefs when we want to as well. 73 percent of Democrats and Republicans had a polite and sincere discussion with someone who had opposing views, and most people (70 percent) think that others who disagree politically just have a different idea of doing good.
Interestingly, staying optimistic about others isn’t just wishful thinking; it might actually pay off. Those who held this belief were not only more likely to have a more satisfying life (84 vs. 70 percent) but also make about $5,000 more annually. There might be moments when you feel like are the worst beings in the universe. But we can reach common ground, we want to help each other, and something tells me we’re going to be ok.For more proof that humans are metal, fire upour previous publication on the subreddit!
