Bored Panda contacted Kamwei Fong and asked some more questions about his work. Firstly, we were interested in what draws the artist to minimalism, and how he thinks it enhances the overall impact of the artwork. We learned that: “It has to do with my character and lifestyle. I always prefer simplicity in everything I do to complex ones. This approach to life reflects strongly on my artwork. In my imaginary world of cats, which I name Wonderfurryland, the emphasis of each cat character is on form and shape, giving less attention to realistic details such as nose, mouth, and whiskers. This abstraction allows viewers to appreciate the essence of the cat’s personality and emotions. When it comes to commissioned pet portraits, more attention was given to characteristics like patterns and unique markings yet the portrait still embraces the minimalistic approach of my style.”

Kamwei continued: “In fact, I created this series of cat characters long before I even owned a cat. I take pride in my distinctive and unique style that gives my artwork an unmistakable identity. Basically, a limbo space (paper), a pen (micro pigment ink fineliner), and a line (precise repetition of fine-lined fur) transform my imagination into tangible reality.”
We were wondering if, outside of his online presence, the artist also participates in art exhibitions or galleries. We learned about various events where Fong got to showcase his artwork like Salon des Beaux Arts, Paris, France; Art Expo Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; or art galleries in France, US, Taiwan, and Singapore.Kamwei also told us more about some memorable stories of reactions of people who have seen and appreciated his art: “There are plenty of good ones. To name a few, I had the privilege of receiving numerous good reviews on my online shop, with many favorable reviews highlighting the quality of my artwork. Additionally, I had the pleasure of meeting some wonderful people at the gallery in Paris and during my exhibition at Salon des Beaux Arts. The exchange with them was pleasant and insightful, it feels great to know that my artworks are loved and appreciated.”

“This happened some time ago but it remains close to my heart. I was honored to receive a heartfelt review from a mother from France who had purchased my artwork for her two young children. She sent me two videos of her children thanking me for my art. Despite the language barrier (they were speaking in French), their happiness conveyed through expressions resonates deeply with me. Nothing is more heartwarming than having young children appreciate art.”
Moreover, I found a deeper sense of fulfillment when I received pet portrait commissions from pet owners who would like a memorial portrait for their departed pets. This gives me a strong sense of responsibility as I am creating a lasting tribute to their beloved pets. Besides being a creative endeavor, this is a meaningful expression of empathy for departed pets that have made beautiful memories in their owners' lives. I truly enjoyed the genuine connection between the artwork and their beloved pet.”
